AdvancedHow would you design a highly available web application across multiple Availability Zones on AWS?

Run EC2 instances (or ECS/EKS tasks) in an Auto Scaling Group spread across at least two AZs, behind an Application Load Balancer that health-checks and routes only to healthy instances. Use a Multi-AZ RDS database for automatic failover, and store session state outside the instances (e.g., in ElastiCache or DynamoDB) so any instance in any AZ can serve any request.

BeginnerWhat's the difference between an AWS Region and an Edge Location?

A Region is a full-scale data center cluster running general-purpose compute (EC2, RDS, etc.). An Edge Location is a smaller CloudFront/Route 53 point of presence used for caching content and resolving DNS closer to end users — it doesn't run general compute the way a Region does.

IntermediateYou need to add a new required column to a live Postgres RDS table with zero downtime. What's your approach?

Add the column as nullable (or with a default) first, deploy application code that handles both old and new schema, backfill existing rows in batches to avoid long locks, then add the NOT NULL constraint only after the backfill completes. Adding a NOT NULL column with no default directly locks the table for the full rewrite.

Learn AWS in depth, free to start

A 20-page guide that goes past the comparison tables — real deploys of the Orders app onto ECS Fargate, the exact IAM role split ECS expects, and the real failures a deployment hits. The first page is free for everyone.

Practice AWS for real, no account needed

Lock down an over-permissive IAM policy, diagnose an AccessDenied error from a real EC2 instance role, or work a failed ECS deployment in a simulated terminal — all before you touch a real account.

AWS DevOps interview FAQ

What AWS services should a DevOps engineer know for interviews?

EC2, S3, IAM, VPC and networking basics, RDS/DynamoDB, CloudWatch, and a deployment path such as ECS/Fargate or CodePipeline. Interviewers care more about how these fit together in a real deployment than about memorizing every service AWS offers.

Do I need an AWS certification to get a DevOps job?

No, but a certification (such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Solutions Architect Associate) can help you get past an initial resume screen. It's not a substitute for being able to explain a real deployment, debug a failed task, or reason about IAM permissions in an interview.

What's the difference between a DevOps role and a cloud/AWS engineer role?

They overlap heavily. A cloud engineer role tends to focus more narrowly on provisioning and managing AWS infrastructure; a DevOps role usually also covers CI/CD, containers, and configuration management on top of that. Many job postings use the titles almost interchangeably.

How do I practice AWS without running up a bill?

Work through fix-the-config exercises and simulated-terminal incidents graded on the actual AWS CLI/IAM policy text first — they teach the same reasoning (least-privilege policies, reading a failed deployment) without touching a real account or paying for anything.
