BeginnerWhat does `helm rollback` do to the revision history?

It does not rewind. `helm rollback my-app 3` creates a new revision whose content is a copy of revision 3, so the history stays a complete record. If the release was at revision 5, the rollback makes it revision 6 with revision 3's configuration.

IntermediateWhat counts as a breaking change to a chart when applying semantic versioning?

A chart's public interface is its values, so removing or renaming a value, changing a default in a way that alters behaviour, or anything that forces users to edit their values is a MAJOR change. A new optional value is MINOR, and a fix with no values change is PATCH.

AdvancedHow do you promote the same application from dev to staging to production with Helm?

Build and test the image once, tag it with the commit SHA, and deploy that same image and the same chart version through each environment, changing only the environment's values file. Pass the tag from the build with `--set-string image.tag=...`. Do not rebuild between environments, so production runs exactly what was tested, and gate production with approvals.

Helm interview FAQ

What are the most commonly asked Helm interview questions?

Interviewers usually describe a release gone wrong — a status stuck "deployed" while the pods crash-loop, a Chart.yaml with lint errors, a rollback that didn't do what was expected — and ask how you'd diagnose and fix it, rather than asking you to define a chart from memory.

Do I need to know Kubernetes well before learning Helm?

Yes — Helm is a packaging and templating layer on top of Kubernetes manifests, so you need to already understand what a Deployment, Service, and ConfigMap are and do before Helm's value is clear.

What's the difference between Helm and Kustomize?

Helm uses a templating engine (Go templates) to generate manifests from values files and supports packaging, versioning, and release management. Kustomize overlays patches on top of plain YAML with no templating language. Interviewers sometimes ask which you'd choose and why — Helm for packaged, reusable apps; Kustomize for simpler per-environment overrides.

How do I practice Helm without a real cluster?

Work through fix-the-chart exercises and simulated-terminal incidents first — fixing a template that breaks on missing values, rolling back a release stuck in a bad state — all graded on real Helm behavior and `helm lint`/`helm template` output.
