IntermediateWhat's the difference between horizontal and vertical scaling, and which does the cloud make easier?

Vertical scaling means making one machine bigger (more CPU/RAM) — simple but has a hard ceiling and usually needs downtime. Horizontal scaling means adding more machines and spreading load across them — the cloud is built for this (auto-scaling groups, managed Kubernetes), since it removes the ceiling and improves fault tolerance at the cost of needing a stateless or coordinated-state design.

BeginnerWhat's the difference between availability zones and regions?

A region is a geographic area (e.g., `us-east-1`); each region contains multiple availability zones — physically separate data centers with independent power/networking, close enough for low-latency replication. Spreading resources across AZs protects against a single data center failure; spreading across regions protects against a regional outage (and helps with latency to different user bases).

AdvancedYou're asked to design a cost-optimization pass on infrastructure that's already in production and can't have downtime. Where do you start?

Start with visibility (tag resources by team/project, use the cost breakdown tools) before changing anything, then look for the low-risk wins first — rightsizing over-provisioned instances based on actual utilization data, cleaning up unattached storage/unused resources, and moving eligible steady-state workloads to reserved/committed pricing — before touching anything architecturally risky.

Cloud interview FAQ

What are the most commonly asked cloud interview questions for DevOps?

Interviewers usually describe a deployment or access problem — a service that can't pull its image, a role with too much access, a networking gap between two services — and ask how you'd diagnose it using real CLI commands, rather than asking you to define IaaS vs PaaS.

Which cloud should I learn first — AWS, Azure, or GCP?

AWS has the largest market share and the most job postings overall, so it's the safest default if you have no preference. Azure is common in enterprises already using Microsoft tooling; GCP is common in data- and Kubernetes-heavy organizations. The underlying concepts — IAM, networking, containers — transfer across all three.

Do I need to be certified in a cloud provider to get hired?

No, but a foundational certification (AWS Cloud Practitioner, AZ-900, GCP Cloud Digital Leader) can help past an initial resume screen. It's not a substitute for being able to explain a real deployment or debug a failed one in an interview.

How do I practice cloud skills without paying for a real account?

Work through fix-the-config exercises and simulated-terminal incidents graded on real CLI and policy text first — locking down an IAM policy, diagnosing a 403, reading a stuck deployment — all without touching a real account or paying anything.
